Physalia physalis
A Portuguese Man O' War, more formally known as the Physalia physalis, is comprised of three different types of polyps: dactylozooid, gonozooid, and gastrozooid. In order to examine the digestive habits of a Portuguese Man O' War, one must assess the gastrozooid, as it is the polyp responsible for feeding. Once the Portuguese Man O' War spots prey, which may be any small fish or crustacean, it reels it in with its tentacles, or dactylozooids, and pushes the food into its gastrozooids, which are its bag-like stomachs. Then, the gastrozooids digest the food by secreting enzymes that break down proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Any indigestible remains are pushed out through the mouth.
